What is a cheap rate for credit card processing? Don't be duped by advertising ploys that tout (a) cheap qualified discount rates (0.39%) or (b) a cheap interchange plus rate (interchange + 0.00%). These are all meaningless numbers when it comes to finding out the only thing you care about; what you as the merchant actually pay. To do that, you need to calculate the "overall total cost to process". That rate includes not just the per transaction fees, but also monthly, annual, and all other charges. A cheap "overall total cost to process" is around 2.75%.

How do I know how much I'm currently paying? The only number you really care about is how much in total it's costing you to accept credit cards per year. That's a number we call your "Overall Total Cost to Process". No credit card processing company will tell you that, instead, they'll tell you misleading numbers like their "interchange plus rate" or their "qualified tier rate". So you have to calculate it yourself. We wrote an article to help you. Also, if you get prices through our Match Tool™, we've converted all of their prices to that same "Overall Total Cost to Process" number so you can compare apples to apples.

How do I pick a new processor? There are 3 things to consider when comparing merchant account services providers:

Do they offer the services I need?
What's their Overall Total Cost to Process?
Is their Customer Service sufficient for me?

Is Switching Processors a Hassle? Not really. Once you've decided to make a change, the things you have to know are:

Do I own my own terminals, are they leased, etc.?
Is there a termination fee? If so, how much?
How does my contract say I need to cancel (a lot are intentionally weird, e.g. via fax, or US mail, etc.)

Past that, the new company will take care of the transition, and usually it takes less than an hour to setup which you can do after hours so there's no downtime at your business.

Is Interchange Plus, Tiered, or Membership Pricing the best? Any or none. It depends entirely on the individual deal. But people feel so strongly that one method is inherently cheaper or better than another that we went ahead and proved that any can be the best / worst through a case study. The overall price is all that really matters to you the business owner, not how a processor packages that price.
